History of the Space
OEE participates in the upkeep, maintenance, and educational opportunities provided by two garden spaces: the Nestled Garden and the Hilltop Garden. Until 2024, OEE had been in charge of both spaces; however, the projects and maintenance required collaboration between multiple focuses, and the OEE coordinator hoped for a successor to continue the projects after their retirement, so the STEM+ committee took over the space.
The bottom pictures show the original garden layout, which existed until April 2024. The OEE student assigned Garden Ambassador collaborated with a team from Tech Ed to design higher quality beds and a more accessible lay out for the space. The four students then collaborated with a faculty member and the STEAM+ committee to secure funding for the project, and worked with the STEM concentration for student input on future projects.
Future major projects for the space must be approved by the STEAM+ committee to ensure proper documentation, due input from facilities and maintenance, and collaboration between Tech Ed and OEE. The STEAM+ committee is committed to supporting the garden as a learning space for students to learn about implementing change, navigating policy, securing funding, and providing high-quality contributions for future students.
The following document is the final proposal that the OEE student put together. The most pressing projects for OEE, Tech Ed, and STEM students to take on are: replacing the grass to eliminate facilities from needing to weed whack and to increase accessibility, getting a faucet installed, and adding two more beds (one more on the ground following the specs in “bulletin board posters”, and a completely raised bed in line with the others against the concrete that wheelchair users can use).
